Traditional Liposuction

What Is Liposuction?

Many people are not sure exactly what liposuction is but the concept is surprisingly simple.   It is a surgical technique that improves the body's contour by removing excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle. Liposuction involves the use of a small stainless steel tube, called a cannula. The cannula is connected to a powerful suction pump and inserted into the fat through small incisions in the skin. Fat removal is accomplished as the suction cannula creates tiny tunnels through the fatty layers. After surgery, these tiny tunnels collapse and thus result in an improved body contour.

Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

The ideal candidate for liposuction is physically fit, exercises regularly, and is no more than 20 pounds overweight. People with very localized, stubborn fatty deposits will have the best results. You are also an ideal candidate if you have made a good effort to eliminate the fatty deposits through extensive exercise and diet. Some problem areas are just simply resistant to exercise so liposuction could provide a very satisfactory solution.

Areas of the Face and Body Treatable with Liposuction

Liposuction works best for areas of the face and body with stubborn fat deposits resistant to overall weight loss, such as those pesky “love handles.” The thighs, buttocks, stomach, hips, upper arms, chin, and neck generally respond well. As an alternative to other types of plastic surgery, you may also choose liposuction to reduce breast size which results in less scarring than other plastic surgery procedures.  And many patients choose to have several body parts treated during the same day.

The Liposuction Procedure

The liposuction procedure involves the insertion of a small, tube-like instrument called a cannula through tiny incisions made by Dr. Ahmed. The cannula then breaks up and vacuums away unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin. Local or IV sedation will be used depending on the type procedure(s) you have. As with any plastic surgery, you should prepare for liposuction carefully and allow yourself plenty of recovery time.

Risks and Benefits of Liposuction

Although liposuction complications are rare, they can include infection, nerve damage, seizures, and negative reactions to anesthesia. A thorough physical examination prior to any liposuction surgery is vital. There is also the risk of adverse side effects which can include bruising and scarring. On the other hand, the benefits can be life changing, with many patients reporting improved appearance, self-esteem, and overall confidence.

Maintaining Your Figure after Liposuction

The importance of healthy lifestyle choices post- liposuction cannot be stressed enough - you should stick to a moderate diet and be sure to exercise for at least 30 minutes three to five times a week. Not only will this help you maintain your figure after liposuction, it will also improve your overall health and help prevent the onset of certain diseases. If you are going to treat yourself to liposuction, be sure to treat your body well afterward!
